Lost & Found: Our Family History Mysteries

Who was Man Hawkins?

Were Alice & Molly Pickle related?

Here is a timeline of the Hawkins family's arrival in America and the only information we have found thus far concerning them -- any information that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated!  I've also included their ties to the Kimball and Pickle families, of whom we also know very little.

1818:  "Man" Hawkins born in England, place unknown.

1818:   John F. Kimball born, probably in Cayuga County, New York

1820:  Molly Pickle born in England, place unknown.

1823:  Alice Pickle (or Pischal?) born, probably in Cayuga County, New York

1837:  Man Hawkins marries Molly Pickle in England.

1838:  Man & Molly emigrate to the United States.  Son Elijah Charles Hawkins born in New York, family legend says that he was born on Ellis Island six weeks after arriving in the U.S.  (per 1900 Payne County, Oklahoma census he had emigrated to the U.S. in 1834 but had lived in the U.S. for 62 years -- that equals 1838, not 1834 -- other accounts also agree with 1838).

1840:  John Kimball & Alice Pickle-Kimball live in St. Joseph County, Michigan (Nottawa Township).

1850:  John, Alice & family at Leonidas Township, Michigan.

1851:  Alice Pickle's daughter, Cynthia Kimball, born in Michigan.

1867:  Elijah Charles Hawkins marries Emma Stroub on September 12th in Adams County, Illinois.  (Emma born in 1848 in Adams County, Illinois.)

1870:  John & Alice Kimball-Pickle move to Kansas.

1870:  Emma & Elijah living in Crawford Township, Kansas.  Per 1870 Crawford County, Kansas census:  Elijah C. Hawkins, age 32, white male, farmer, pob New York, father of foreign birth, mother of foreign birth, cannot read, ? male child of ? years of age & upwards (hard to read - it might be a "1"?).  Emma Hawkins, age 22, white female, "keeping house", pob Illinois, mother of foreign birth, no children.  James Lindsey, age 7, white male, pob Ohio, attended school within the year.  Jackson Lindsey, age 8, white male, pob Iowa (hard to read),  attended school within the year.  William Hawkins, age 26, white male, farmer, pob New York, father of foreign birth, mother of foreign birth, 1 male child.

1876-1878:  John & Alice Pickle Kimball are on the Cowley County, Kansas tax rolls.

-- not sure what happened but Emma Hawkins is now out of the picture --

1877:  Cynthia Anne Kimball marries Elijah in Cowley County, Kansas

1884:  John Kimball dies near Sharon, Western Harper County, Kansas

1887:  Alice Pickle Kimball dies -- family legend says she died at daughter Cynthia's house.

This year Man made the Oklahoma Land Run with Elijah.

1890:  Oklahoma Territorial Directory lists:  Hawkins, WB; Hawkins, EC (Elijah Charles); Hawkins, Henry; Hawkins, JH.

1900:  Payne County, Oklahoma census -- Elijah Charles and Cynthia live in Mulhall, Oklahoma.  Molly is not living with them.

1935:  Per family legend, Molly Pickle Hawkins dies at daughter-in-law Cynthia's house -- she is 115 years old?  This doesn't sound feasible.
