General Notes: The 1880 Pottawatomie County, Kansas census reveals that a Joseph Myers, age 74, born in North Carolina, was living there with his wife and their four sons. Living next door were his sister Sarah's son, Daniel Spalding, his wife and their children.

MYERS, Joseph The Oldest Inhabitant Gone. Joseph Myers, the oldest person in this part of the county, died Tuesday, May 22, 1894, at 2 P.M. The deceased was born in North Carolina, April 21, 1806, and therefore died in his 89th year. When quite young, he moved to Indiana and a little later to Illinois. He married Elanor Mann, January 11, 1825. His wife died in 1846. June 5, 1853, he married Sarah A. Ware, who still survives him. The deceased was an old soldier. He enlisted in Company D, 25th Iowa volunteers. He was discharged in less than a year on account of disability resulting from varicose viens. [sic] Mr. Myers moved to Kansas in 1866, settling in Cherokee County and in 1871 moved to Pottawatomie County and took a claim near Westmoreland. He was by trade a painter and carpenter. He had been for about fifty years a member of the Christian Church and was a member of the Westmoreland post G. A. R. He was the father of seventeen ceildren, (sic).
The funeral services will be held to-morrow at 2 P.M. under the auspices of the post. H. D. Fisher D. D. will preach the sermon.

Ware, and is actually George William Ware.

(Interesting note:  Sarah's grand-daughter from her marriage to Michael O. Ware was Beada Maude Ware, who married her half-uncle, Sarah's son Jasper Newton Myers from her second marriage to Joseph Myers, so the Ware family became inter-related with the Myers family in two ways)

Editors rec order:
A genuine old-fashioned surprise party was given to Daniel
Spaulding, on the occasion of his 58th birthday, April 6th.
His brothers, and children, and a few intimate friends only
were invited to attend the party. It was a ha ppy surprise to
Uncle Dan and family. We met in the city of Westmoreland, and at
11:30 a.m., a small crowd of thirty-five, wended our way over
the hill to Uncle Dan's residence with our loaded baskets and a
few small presents, which were thankfully accepted by him. The

When, at a later hour, dinner was served, lo! and be hold, the
table was loaded with eatables, and six old hens yielded u p
their lives as sacrifice to the hungry guests. After dinner we
spent a few hours in social chat, then departed to our several
homes, wishing Uncle Dan to live to see fifty-eight more
birthdays.

L.W. Spaulding Passes Away Monday At Payette Hospital
Pay ette paused for an hour Wednesday afternoon of this week to
permit businessmen and employees to pay honer to L.W.Spaudling,
79, pioneer merchant and long ti me participant in civic and
business affairs. He passed away at the Payette Ge neral hospital
monday following a week's illness. Funeral services were held a t
the Payette Methodist church on wednesday with Rev. P.R.Kaemmer
in charge. Funeral arrangements were made by the Peterson-foster
Funeral home and internm ent in the Riverside
cemetery. Active pallbearers were K.L. Johnson, Earl Farb er,
E.H.Murphy, Clarance Nesbitt, Arthur Lattig and Herman Precht
and honorar y pallbearers, and old time friends of the deceased
were W.H. (???), (???), J. B. Wood, Clyde Thompson, J.E. Roberts,
J.A. Swank, Walter Pence, J.R. McKinney , L.V. Patch,Dr. J.R.
Woodward, Charles Lattig, H.O. Musgrove, and Isaac Adair .
Lot William Spaulding was born January 29, 1863 in Westmoreland
Kansas and married Mary in westmorland October 15, 1886. In his
many years of service in this community he served on the city
council,the school board, and for many ye ars as chief of the
volunteer fire department, also as vice president of the I daho
State Hardware association and up to the lime of his death was
president of the Peoples Irrigation district. He was one if the
charter members of the Payette Chamber of commerce.
Mr. Spaulding engaged in many varied types of ent erprise
throughout his lifetime and was known as being the oldest
business ma n in Payette county in the number of years of
business experience.
On rented land at Westmoreland Kansas, he first started farming,
later moving to his fat her's farm where he purchased adjoining
land and branched out into a successfu l livestock business which
he operated until 1897. He and his brother-in-law, the late
M.E. Wood of Payette then entered the grocery and queen's ware
busi ness in Manhattan Kansas which they operated until coming to
Idaho in 1902. I n Payette Mr. Spaulding and Mr. Wood opened a
hardware and furniture business in the ol Commerical hotel
building; and after two years in this location adde d undertaking
to there line of hardware and furnature and moved to the
buildi ng now occupied by the Ben Franklin store. In 1908 they
moved into there own n ewly-constructed building which is the
present site of the Spaulding Hardware. In 1922 the furniture
and undertakig part of the business was sold tothe Pete rson
Furniture company in Payette.
In 1925, D.V. Spaulding, son of the deceas ed, came to Payette
and entered into partnership with his father upon the deat h of
the former partner, M.E. Wood. This latter latter partnership
continued until the present time.
He is survived by four children, R.U. Spaulding of Bla ckfoot,
Idaho; D.V. Spaulding of Payette Velma Spaulding of
Philadelphia, and Loran Spaulding of Salem Oregon; a sister,
Mrs. M. Wood of Payette, and three grandchildren, Arlin
Spaulding of Blackfoot, Idaho, ad Keith and Barbara Spau lding of
Salem Oregon. Wife of the deceased passed away in June 1940.

Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery in Mulhall, directed by Smith

Helen was born on March 31, 1920 in Brame r, Mo. to Sanborn and
Ethel
O'Dell. She died Saturday, March 10, 2001 at Loga n Hospital and
Medical
Center in Guthrie.
She married Jesse Spaulding on Au gust 31, 1936 and he preceded
her in
death on October 12, 1984. She married W alter Towle on October
20, 1994
and he preceded her in death on June 3, 1997.
She is survived by one son, Jesse Spaulding and Mary of Mulhall;
two
daugh ters, Helen Marie Byer and Bill Sr. of Mulhall, and Jean
Clark and
John of Gu thrie; three brothers, Orville O'Dell, Melvin O'Dell
and
Charles O'Dell, all of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Fern Jones of
Guthrie
and Edna Butler of Mulha ll; seven grandchildren, Mike Byer,
Bill Byer, Jr., Terri Hammond, Jeff Clark , James Clark, J.D.
Spaulding, Rebekah Cunningham; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and one son,
Jerry Lee Spaulding.
