century. Sir Robert Wingfield was Knighted by King Henry VI in
1426. He se rved as an M.P. for Suffolk 1427-1439, and as Steward
to the Duke of Norfolk. The earliest documented Wingfield is
John de Wyngefeld in the Calender of Pate nt Rolls in 1279. He is
closely connected or possibly related to the Braiose ( Breus)
family. Sir Robert Wingfield died in 1454 and left an extensive

General Notes: Robert Wingfield was born about 1491, as the second and last
child of Sir Henr y Wingfield and Elizabeth Rokes at Orford,
Suffolk. Elizabeth was a late and s econd marriage for his
father, who was likely about fifty when Robert was born . Robert

to the old age of Robert Wingfield of Upton. Margery Qua rles

was buried at Upton on Apr. 2, 1580. The Wingfield family
lineage t races to the mid-13th century in Suffolk.
Elizabeth Cecil was born about 1535 , and was the daughter of
Richard Cecil and Jane Heckington. Her brother, Sir William
Cecil, was the well known Lord Burghley of Queen Elizabeth's
reign. T he Cecil family rise to great prominence in Tudor
England began with David Cec il, the grandfather of Elizabeth,
who fought at Bosworth with the soon- to- be King Henry VII.
After the death of Robert Wingfield, Elizabeth married Hugh

Earl Of Northampton3, Elizabeth Plantagenet Princess Of England2, Edward The First (Longshanks) King Of England1) was christened on 14 Oct 1640 in London, England and died on 1 Jul 1688 in Delaware at age 47.
General Notes: OF Sussex County, Delaware
With Norton Claypoole we arrive at the first Americ an colonist
in tracing the direct line of descent. Norton was c. on Oct. 16,
1640 in London, England to Sir John Claypoole and Mary Angell.
He married Rach el about 1670 and arrived in America on the ship
"Bachelor's Delight" via Barb ados on Feb. 22, 1678. His wife
Rachel joined him coming from London in 1681. Norton had spent
three years while in transit with his brother Edward in
Barb ados. Norton and Rachel had six children: John in London in
1672 who died youn g; James 1673 in London; Mary 1682 in Lewes;
Robert in 1683; Jeremiah in 1685; and Elizabeth in 1687. James
Claypoole, older brother of Norton, was a Quaker and close
associate of William Penn and arrived in the American colonies
abo ut four years after Norton. A number of letters exist between
the two brothers in Delaware and London before James's arrival
in Philadelphia. The descendent s of James Claypoole include
Betsy Ross and Alfred Vanderbilt. The Plantagenet ancestry,
largely unkown to the descendents of Norton Claypoole, was well
kno wn to the descendents of James Claypoole in the 19th century.
Norton Claypoole owned 2000 acres in Delaware and was elected to
the State Legislature in 1686 . Norton died at Lewes on May 15th,
1688. Rachel remarried Nehemiah Fields and died Jan. 24, 1718.
As no record of their marriage in 1670 is found, Rachel's maiden
name is not known. In researching this area, I have a theory
that she may have been a Rachel Joyce born in London to Robert
and Rachel Joyce. To da te I have not found any conclusive proof
of Rachel's maiden name. With this ge neration, we end the
American portion of the direct line of descent and contin ue the
remaining generations in England.

Norton left London for Barbados and then to Delaware with money loaned by brother James (the Quaker leader). This part of James' hope to establish additional sugar operations as brother David had done in Barbados. He left (in 1672?), settling in now Sussex county Delaware. James housed Rachel until she finally left (perhaps on the ship Elizabeth & Mary), landed at Perth Amboy, with their son James, and was collected by Norton. They had another son Jeremiah and daughter Elizabeth. After Norton died she married Nehemiah Field. James' letterbooks do not mention Rachel's family name.

Marriage Notes: Alternate Date 1663 (Obtained from LDS Website --Pin #97401

General Notes: Rachel's last name isn't known. Some say Joyce but never found proof of such, according to all info Rachel was really a peice of work. Her brother in law made arrangements for her to join Norton in Delaware, James refused to use her name. Norton and Rachel had several children in London, a girl and two boys, one boy survived to come to Delaware with her where they had several more, think off hand four more. She had two children by her second husband, marrying within days of the birth of the first.

Earl Of Northampton3, Elizabeth Plantagenet Princess Of England2, Edward The First (Longshanks) King Of England1) was born in 1677 and died in 1704 at age 27.

37 M    i. James Claypool (Claypole) (Iii?) [26] was born on 14 Feb 1701 in Sussex County, Delaware and died on 4 Oct 1789 at age 88.
General Notes: from the Claypool Family in America, Volume II, by Evelyn Claypool Bracken, p. 151C. "Since there is still some controversy as to the ancestry of James, born 1701, he will be listed as James Claypool (James-James or Norton) along with his descendants in this volume. He is listed as a grandson of James by the Media Research Bureau; Rebecca Graff, THE CLAYPOOLE FAMILY OF PHILADELPHIA; THE HOWARD LINEAGE; Atty. William C. Hudson, past-president of the Detroit Society for Genalogical Reaserch; the late Atty. John Claypool of Indianapolis, Ind.; and Arthur H. Hurst. On April 1, 1971, Mr. Hurst wrote: 'Dear Mrs. Bracken: I have been studying the Claypool records, and I think now that you have been correct and that I was wrong all the time, about James Claypool, who was born 1701. James Claypool born 1701, must certainly have been a descendant of James the immigrant... Sincerely Arthur H. Hurst.' However, the late Edward Claypool (a genealogist) listed him as a grandson of Norton. Most of the people claiming ancestry from Norton received their information from him."

Does anyone else believe that James Claypool, b. 1701 and married to Jane Byrd(?), is the grandson of James Claypool, the Immigrant, who was married to Helena Mercer, and the son of James Claypool, married to Mary Cann. I know that the Royal Crown of Charlemagne Society accepts the above. Is the James or Norton debate still going on? I know Mary Cann Claypool remarried after her husbands death, but does anyone know what happened to her. If so, did any records on her point to James b. 1701 as being her son. The way I understood it was Norton could not be grandfather because the the male descendant--James--who could fit the bill--died before he had heirs. There is no doubt that James Claypool, b. 1664,son of the Immigrant James, had a son James, b. 1701. It has been a while since I worked on this. I am hopeful more proof is out there now. .

believe that Owen Deve r married a sister of Jacob Gum since

single. Owen died before 1789 in Madison County which had been
formed from Lincoln County.

Delaware. Sarah Claypoole Gum died in 1799. Sarah and Jacob had
