   Other names for Matts are Anderson, Martin and Hakans, Matts.

By the way, Tim's Gr Grandparents ( Matts & Lena (Svartbeck)), both born in Narpes (Matts specifically in Finby) met on their ship or after landing here. They married and had 2 kids in Penna, near Pittsburgh. He was a coal miner. Depression came in late l800's and they returned to Finland , very poor also. He came back to USA after a year or so and settled in Mass. On that trip he changed or his name was changed by Ellis Island to Anderson like his brothers John and Peter. Perhaps they traveled to USA together.?? The point: in Penn. their name was Hakans w/umlaut. In Mass. it was Anderson !! (That info is shown on their firstborn 's Baptismal record done in Scottdale, Penn.
Just want you to know Frena that the names, etc. have nothing to do with Finnish.. That is a totally different landguage & difficult to learn also. Narpes was and remains "dual language but inhabitants of the area ethnically are 90% Swedish descent and speak only Swedish. ( the older generations of course).
